What it is
Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure which uses a stream of fine micro crystals to exfoliate the surface of the skin evenly. It is also called particle beam skin resurfacing, or the “lunch-time power peel”. It has been U.S. FDA approved since 1997.
How it works
The equipment consists of a tabletop unit with a delicate tubular hand piece. Air is circulated through small hoses to project a highly controlled spray of fine medical-grade aluminium oxide crystals, 100 microns in size, under pressure and vacuum. This produces a gentle and controlled abrasion of the outer layer of skin. Repeated over a course, the process allows younger skin to move to the surface. How much the texture, colour and appearance change varies from person to person.
What it treats
Superficial acne marks and scars, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, oily greasy skin with enlarged pores, pigment irregularities and stretch marks.
What to expect
Microdermabrasion is an office-based procedure performed by your dermatologist. A session takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the skin condition and the area treated. No anaesthetic is required. Normal activities can be resumed immediately, though you will need to protect the area from sun exposure and use a sunscreen.
The average patient requires 5 to 12 treatments, spaced about one to two weeks apart. Your doctor will draw up a treatment protocol to suit your condition.
